New York City emergency medical workers prepare for layoffs

A union leader said the city was planning to cut 400 emergency medical services positions amid the pandemic.

The head of New York City’s emergency medical services union said Wednesday the city is preparing to lay off hundreds of its members as the budget crisis grows amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Oren Barzilay, president of FDNY EMS Local 257, blamed Mayor Bill de Blasio and his administration for the expected fallout.

“Even with the threat of a second wave of COVID-19 looming and two recent outbreaks in Brooklyn, Bill de Blasio and his team at City Hall wants to balance the city's budget on our backs, eliminating some 400 emergency medical responder positions and placing every New Yorker’s life at risk,” he said in a statement.

Bill Neidhardt, Mayor Bill de Blasio's press secretary, did not deny the plans.

"To be clear: City Hall does not want these layoffs to happen, but this is the hole we are in without a stimulus or borrowing authority," he said in a statement. "Our EMTs and firefighters save lives every day and we are working with their unions to find personnel savings to avoid layoffs, but unfortunately all agencies will face layoffs."

No termination notices have been issued as both sides continued to discuss ways to save the city money.

"Yesterday, we were praised as heroes, essential workers saving lives," Barzilay said. "Today, the city government treats us like zeros. New Yorkers who lived through this deadly pandemic know otherwise."

De Blasio has said the city may need to cut as many as 22,000 employees as it grapples with declining contributions from the state and a tax base decimated by people leaving the city, a shuttered Broadway, and a nearly non-existent tourism industry.

The city’s emergency medical technicians and paramedics responded to record call volume in March and early April, peaking at some 6,500 calls a day.

The EMTs and paramedics were not immune to COVID-19. At the peak, nearly 1 in 4 were out sick as the virus ravaged New York City, killing over 23,000 residents so far.

Never bite the hand that feeds.
Governor Cuomo and Mayor DeBlasio continually used the Corona Virus as a platform to spew disparaging remarks
towards our Federal Government and still using our hostage citizens as negotiating pieces to demand handouts.
Not happening. You do not spit in the face of the President and expect to get away with it. Bad... bad outcome.
All politicians should take this as a valuable lesson on what not to do to their boss...the President of the United States.
The state of disrepair in New York lies solely with these two politicians.

Since we are still during a pandemic crisis, this simply doesn't make any sense.

And the bold and proud New York Transplants will keep flaunting their pearly Whites without a mask as no one is available to haul them to Lenox or Elmhurst/Presbyterian etc for intense COVID complications.

Crazy to do this. I’m sure cuts could have been made elsewhere.

Good luck when you call 911. Cops are cut. Ems going to get cut. Maybe if enough people flee the city you won’t have so much traffic so the response times maybe can average 10 minutes. That is reasonable for a heart attack.

It’s Time to learn cpr ( everyone should know it anyways)

At this point we will have to carry a full first aid kid around. Laying off first responders is a new level of crazy. Its going to look like the world of Soylent Green in a few years here if it keeps up.

NYC generates 8% of the U.S. GDP

so the hand that feeds should set aside words and not cut off the nation's nose to spite one's face

For now NYC generates that. With all of the lawlessness, crazy taxes, stupid policies, the gates at the state line are now wide open and people are using it.
