Thats common among many people. Its the power of alcohol. Although tequila usually results in strange shenanigans. Wine and beer are more chill. Jagermister results in time travel and puke. Dont drink that one.
I only drink tequila so I always have crazy times when I'm out. Man this darn virus...so many nights of shenanigans missed...
^You guys keep forgetting the OP is an older lady pushing 70. She's not going to any bars. She's not going to get hit on by guys looking for action. She's looking for companionship among her own kind and of course, chit-chatting with others at an event or waiting for an event to start will make the day less lonely. No one is going to consider her threatening or an immigrant with ulterior motives.
Ohhh okay. That makes sense. I've had ladies that age try to chat me up on the train. I know they mean well, but I can't get past my gut reaction that if a stranger in NYC is trying to have meaningful conversation with you, you'll find out in under five minutes that they're either proselytizing, want something from you, or are a little "off". So I end up doing my best to shut down the conversation before it even gets going. Maybe OP would have better luck trying to chat up other lonely older ladies, they would probably "get" her better than other New Yorkers.
I used to eat dinner at bars all the time before this effing virus. It's one of the rare occasions where I don't mind being invisible. Good food, good jukebox, sports on tv and NOBODY talks to you, unless it's a slow night and the bartenders are bored. Heaven.

Yesterday some guy in Brooklyn saw me with a racquetball racket and started asking about the sport. He said he played handball. Despite his genuine interest I couldn't help but thinking this is scam and needed to run away from him!
Had this been any other US city, I would know the person is genuine with almost zero chance of a scam.

Man, you just painted a picture Hannah
Look just be happy for the memories I guess. I stopped going to bars when my $40 happy hour became $80.

I used to meet people smoking weed on stoops back in the 80's in the Village and Midtown West. It was an interesting experience. Met some cool cab drivers that way too.
Tompkins Square Park was another "pick up" spot for me and Nightclubs.
