Wow. Brownsville. Wasn't that one of the neighborhoods that were "gentrifying".
73rd Precinct. They're getting a lot of action.

After a particularly violent summer, with shootings nearly double the amount they were this time last year, NY1 decided to spend time in one of the most impacted neighborhoods - Brownsville, Brooklyn, for a series we’re calling “On the Beat in Brownsville, Inside the 73rd Precinct."

What You Need To Know:

Brownsville has a nearly 100 percent increase in shooting victims and more than 70 percent jump in murders
Gang violence is blamed for half of the shootings
The NYPD has partnered with the FBI in two Brooklyn Precincts to get federal charges against shooters
Precinct commanders say they have a 60 percent success rate in solving homicides

I found this interesting:

"The filing of federal charges keeps defendants out of the state court system, avoiding the new state bail reforms that police officials blame for allowing many alleged criminals to remain on the streets."

You know things are bad with the local government when they have to file federal charges to keep them out of the state system.

Brownsville was definitely not visibly gentrifying prior to the pandemic, and I'm not surprised that a good chunk of the overall uptick in crime is concentrated in areas that were already struggling with violent crime prior.

From a larger planning perspective, the larger area around Broadway Junction should be targeted for a lot more investment. Those investment dollars means more eyes on the ground, more business, and more employment there and it would be a far better leveraging of existing transit infrastructure in terms of having ridership more against peak direction.

Yeah. Can't deny reality. Something's up. And bail reform is not cutting it.

If you really want to solve the crime, sterilize the poor and stupid. You will see some real results within 20 years. Bill Gates isnt wrong there. Its the poor that reproduce at alarming rate when they should be doing it the least.

Or just keep dumping money on the same problem that will never go away. Programs, housing, money, this and that. all bandaids.

Response:

I have pointed the finger at Housing Projects for years as a poster.
Brownsville itself is a neighborhood filled with hard working people.
The projects unfortunately house everybody, including the unwanted.
Rid the projects and rid much of Brownsville's problems.

Level the Projects and replace them with Rent to own family homes.

The military is the grown up version of Brownsville gangbangers and their toy guns.

A bit too late for that. The whole program is flawed.

Its only going to get worse. Law enforcement warned about the bail laws possible effects. Here we are. Politicians don’t care. Local officials don’t bring it up. Unless it involves a cop or trump politicians don’t say a word.

I'd be more interested to see if Bed Stuy takes a dive. It's been gentrifying for years but still has some thug/gang element left. I wonder if the gang activity will increase like it is in Brownsville.
