FYI This is going to be such a mess. I feel for the parents, student, teachers...everybody!

Students who opt to return to city schools in-person part time will no longer be guaranteed live instruction on the days they’re learning remotely from home, a last-minute shift aimed at helping alleviate a massive staffing shortage faced by public schools trying to roll out so-called “blended learning.”

But the change is likely to frustrate some families. Some students in more crowded schools already will only be able to attend in person once a week. Without live instruction on their remote days, they could spend four days a week without any real-time interaction with their teachers.

Just as well, I think. The idea was nice, but it's not easy for a young child to be stuck in front of a video feed for a few hours every day. And it's not any easier for the parents who have to keep them in their seat at a certain time, never mind that they may have work commitments and other kids to care for. Never mind that some kids will be in care situations where the live video is not an option (say, they're at grandmas and she has no computer, or they're in day care with their little brother and the day care will not be bothering with this).

We kind of fell into a groove with doing the remote assignments last spring. I'd say it was 90% torture at the beginning, and more like 50% torture and 50% fun towards the end. Maybe this is better than live instruction. As long as there is some actual physical class attendance. I'm losing hope that this will happen, though. My kids' school has emptied out - at least 20% of the families have gone private, or moved out. But the others... I feel terrible for them. As if coronavirus wasn't bad enough, now they're being kicked around by DOE for the sake of someone's irrational fears, laziness and corruption (someone probably got paid off nicely to open all those remote learning warehouses for the kids).

The cookie cutter doesn’t work for younger child, especially for kindergarten. Plus, why would any educator think having kids in front of their iPad is a good way of learning? This is not clearly thought out.

No kidding! De Blasio's calling the shots.

That said. This is a huge undertaking.
