138th and Amsterdam isn't that bad. It's funny how people randomly go into a neighborhood and something bad happens. lol. I lived there in that area for 10+ years and never witnessed anything like what seventh described. Must have been a bad night. I'm not denying it happened Seventh. I'm sure it did. I'm just saying just because that one night was bad doesn't mean every night is like that. It's the ghetto. Is it horrible? No. It's liveable.
The thing about that specific area is that it tends to become a hangout area for the high schoolers and junior highers. There are several schools within a few blocks from there. There's Randolph High, Mott Hall JHS, and two other Junior Highs around there. There's bound to be a few bad apples in the bunch. That's bound to grate your nerves after a while.
Honestly I don't know how much your paying in rent. It would help with your choice. If it's cheap enough, it might be worth the risk. I don't love that specific area though. There are better spots within that neighborhood. For instance I see for rent signs on some of the apartment buildings on Convent from time to time (probably a bit more expensive than a place on Amsterdam, I would guess).
BTW, White people have been moving into the neighborhood for the last 5 or 6 years already.
maybe i happened to be there on a wild night i guess...

I have another doubt. How safe is 52 nd st/4 th avenue (sunset park)?
Safer than 138 and amsterdam but a bit on the slum side in my opinion.
