The owner and chef of The Thirsty Koala in Astoria, Katherine Fuchs, has a lot to lose if she can’t find ways to promote her business amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“If this restaurant goes, I’m probably going to lose my house,” said Fuchs.
What You Need To Know
One business owner told NY1 that even when indoor dining begins, she will need to continue using her outdoor dining space to stay afloat
The NYC Hospitality Alliance said that they have received a number of questions from restaurant owners in regards to heating outdoor dining spaces
City Councilman Joe Borelli said that the current process for getting the permits to heat outdoor dining spaces is too difficult and costly
I worked at a hotel that had a large hall for events. They had these heat pillars outside for the smokers and anyone on line to get in. I recall it gave off a lot of heat. One or more of those, with some siding should help until the weather gets very cold. I think Winter will be bad but we might get a mild one, the weather has been so unpredictable in Winters last few years.
Please those heat pillars, you need to be right up against to feel the heat. And if its windy and the air goes through your clothes and you get chilled to the bone those heat pillars do nothing.
Who the f wants to get bundled up to dine in the cold.
they open indoors in a week, man wtf are they still complaining about?
Oh I don't know, maybe government destroying them by dictating business terms that happen to be financially untenable in an expensive industry? Especially when said terms are being levied due to a political feud that restaurants are not involved in.

NYC Outdoor Dining Will Be Permanent, Year-Round: De Blasio
New York City’s al fresco dining program that was launched in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic lockdown will become a permanent part of the Big Apple, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday.
Additionally, establishments will also be able to set up electric heaters on the sidewalks and roadways to help patrons stay warm. Natural gas and propane-fueled devices will only be allowed on the sidewalks.
Restaurant Owners Optimistic Over Extension and Expansion of Outdoor Dining
The news was a relief for Katherine Fuchs, the owner of the Thirsty Koala on Ditmars Blvd.
When we spoke to her earlier this week, she was unable to plan for the future of her business. Now, with guidance from City Hall, she’s decided to invest in heating for her outdoor seating.
“I was so happy to hear the news because it takes a lot of pressure off knowing that they’re going to allow us to continue doing this,” Fuchs said.

Because the guidelines are extremely strict and will barely make them more money.
