Some of you are probably aware of ReThinkNYC, but for those of you who aren't, it's essentially a group and a plan to cost-efficiently greatly improve transit within NYC and the Tri-State area that generally hinges on combining / synchronizing operations of the Tri-State Area's three commuter rail systems to create through-running, frequent express transit throughout the region. This includes also making the experience a lot more pleasant and Penn Station to be less of a squalid rat's nest.

Explanation videos can be found here: Videos - ReThinkNYC

Home - ReThinkNYC

Right now we're seeing some pretty low transit usage numbers and we have an incoming administration that is a much more inclined towards and capable of infrastructure planning and investment. Meanwhile, the economy could maybe do with some stimulus spending that goes into work separate from direct stimulus checks or encouraging loans.

Seems the proposal require more money, and still more construction or new tracks, or bridges, or tunnels and buildings. These plans are just different ways we can minimize new construction, and hopefully save money. I say lets go in a completely different direction.

The best way to be efficient is to not concentrate so many people in the area, thereby eliminating much of the stress on the already existing system. Dispersing the population more will not cost us a thing, and will actually grow wealth better for the rest of the country by finally utilizing some of the less utilized space and urbanity we already have. Examples include Baltimore or Hartford. All the tech companies should just go there. The RE is cheaper anyways. Businesses there will thrive due to increase in population and the wealth they bring with.

This plan essentially allows for that--the through-running and high frequency aspect of it means that people can more easily commute from point to point not just to Manhattan CBDs, but from satellite, secondary CBD to satellite, secondary CBD with either an elimination of a transfer and wait or "reverse commute" peak directions with greater frequency and less wait. This plan essentially makes pretty reasonable alterations to existing infrastructure as well as planned necessary infrastructure to make it so you don't need to concentrate everything as much, so you get both.

It seems to just be Newark to Midtown Manhattan to Queens. I am talking about spreading away from the metro area. Its too crowded. The infrastructure is not meant to hold that much people. Why expand the already existing one just to accommodate more people? Many of those people should not even be here. They should stop coming here, and or move somewhere else.

We can start by filling the hole with sand.
This ancient vessel of transportation has
lost its' ability to adapt.....

Keep all transportation above ground....save millions.....make millions.

It looks like subways don't have to run 24x7.

No, they don't especially as NYC is no longer a three-shift manufacturing powerhouse that it was. Night bus service with decent shelters, frequency, and signal priority would accomplish about the same or better for the Sunday-Thursday wee hours and would yield better planned maintenance and cleaning schedules for the subway.

However, ReThinkNYC isn't really about planning over subways so much as improving and making better, more pleasant and more efficient use of the commuter rail networks. The current way it's operated is pretty inefficient.
