A high level of mask usage is one factor, although there's always one maskhole on my ride but they tend to only ride a few stops and get off and transfer so they are not potentially exposing everyone else for very long.

The one big change is you rarely have people who will stand facing you or even sit snugged against you anymore. I've taken the subway, it's nowhere near packed like before. Even when it is packed some people opt to go in and wait for the next train. If I had to estimate, we lost about 80% of the usual riders. The usual workers going in are healthcare and some blue collar office building worker that are still going in. You see only a handful of office workers and that's about it. Just one walk around the usual lunch eat places you can tell the effects. A lot of places used to have 3-4 lines are now down to 2 checkout lines at fast foods. Most places you can't even walk in and have to pickup at the window and deliveries are not frequently seen anymore.

Clearly you aren't taking the train at peek times or to the boros. Trains are packed. People are squeezing next to each other for a seat and people are in each other faces.

Exactly, yet nobody is getting sick from doing this day in and day out. My money is on herd immunity, not masks.. But that's not what people want to hear...

Yeah, how about also putting your money on those long-term side effects that nobody knows anything about Doc. You have fun with that. Some people should wear a mask while typing.

Nah, it's probably mostly masks and decent cleaning / ventilation. Herd immunity needs a massive number of infections and/or a lot of people vaccinated.

There is no cleaning/ventilation going on in public transit. At least none that I have seen. Initially during the lockdown there was some.

Really? Wow. Because the most crowded line I've taken was the 7 and it's no way near how it was in it's heyday. People (including me) decide not to sit unless an empty spot remains between people already seated. And no one is really pressed next to each other while standing.

Yup. They are busy in the Bronx. And while I haven't been on them recently due to my surgery my window overlooks the train and I sit on my windowsill a lot and watch the trains go by. 2 nights ago at about midnight a bronx bound train was going by and while it wasn't rush hour packed it, every car had a good number of people standing close to each other.
