TJ's main claim of fame is that it sells decently nutritious food CHEAPLY. It is obviously equally affordable as McDonalds, so there is no economic reason to cry gentrification. TJ's is perceived as gentrification (even though it is a budget food store) solely because it sells food of decent quality. Anti-gentrifiers are sore losers who don't want anything of decent quality in the neighborhood because concepts of decency and quality are psychologically threatening to those who do not possess any trace of personal decency or quality. This hating on good quality is what anti-gentrification, and all other forms of "progressivism", always ultimately boil down to.

I agree, Trader Joe's does not signify gentrification to me either

Obviously. Decent quality for cheap. TJ's is to food as a certain condo community in the Bronx is to home .

Trader Joes is not only better quality groceries but also cheaper then grocery stores in the hood. So I don't know why people don't want them in there area versus Associated or whatever.
