“My brother didn’t deserve a single ounce of this, and I’d trade places with him in a heartbeat,” his devastated older brother Darley, 18, told the Daily News. “I was always his big brother, but he was honestly my idol and someone I always looked up to, deep down.”

While I don't celebrate his death, he brought this on himself. We live in society under a social contract of sorts, which includes following the laws and not putting others at risk. This guy's actions were extremely reckless and put others in danger of dying needlessly. The world is a better place without this guy and his wanton disregard for life, either his own or others. Note, I'm much more forgiving in those cases where someone puts only his or her life in danger. But when you take steps that put others' lives in danger as well, to hell with you.

Another thing--and it's been a while since I studied up on the law regarding driving in NYC--but I'm pretty sure that it remains illegal for a 16 year old to drive alone on the streets of NYC still. When I was getting my license, 16 year old people could not drive on the streets of NYC alone.

Seeing more and more of these young guys and teens with fast, high-end cars drag racing or going at very high speeds. Many of them have phony license plates and no insurance either.
he just wanted to be like Dom and Brian...

Late 90s when we were in our early 20s we did some stupid things as well, but I can only count the number of times I have driven over 100 mph and it was always either on a beach highway at night or i80 in Pa.

Cars today are insanely fast. Drivers test is a joke too. Kids don’t understand physics involved.

No 16 year old should be driving a 414 hp Mustang Gt. I remember when I was 17, dad wanted to buy a 88Gt mustang for me from his friend. His friend wouldn’t allow it, said it was a death box on wheels especially for a young kid and and that’s a 225 up car with hardly any brakes or suspension. I ended up driving my dads 140 hp mercury station wagon, probably saved my life as I was dying for some Hp and speed. Friend of mine back then got himself a mustang gt, he was older than me. He promptly totaled it on LIe few months later.

I always said, kids should be taken to a morgue to show what happens when people drink and drive, do drugs, drive fast on public roads. That’s a lasting impression. Should be part of the drivers course.

Correct. High performance cars will handle better but at those speeds, your skills need to be that of experienced race car divers to take advantage of the car’s better performance.

I hit 120mph on the way to Jones beach when I was 19 and that was a huge rush but it was reckless. While the highway was empty, you can lose control and get killed. Majority of folks don't realize that street tires are only rated for certain speeds. Once you go over the limit, braking and steering may not work well.

On a side note , he was street racing, not drag racing.

Plus I didn't think 16 year olds can have a full license in NY.
