Then why has prostitution stayed illegal for so long here in the vast majority of the country. And even now I haven't heard any large scale support for legalizing it. And it isn't men who seem really against it.

You really don't see men against prostitution (or at least publicly saying they are against prostitution)?
I'm going to guess there might be some bit of religious and social mores that might have influenced some of the discourse on prostitution.

The influence of religion. People often do not see how it affects our lives even when we want no part of it.
Yeah, and I guess it is an excuse/coincidence I was taught in school sex is bad and we should always abstain from sex. Had nothing to do with religion...total coincidence. Total coincidence in less religious countries they receive comprehensive sex education.

How ironic that NYC Catholic priest after priest gets exposed this decade for molestation of children that has been happening since 1990. (I suppose they caught all the ones from the 70s and 80s already)
BUT a grown man and woman aren't allowed to have pre-marital consensual relationships.
Meanwhile God in the Bible told 2 prominent Men to marry prostitutes and turned the other way until it got out of hand with Sodom and Gomorrah.
Religious people only hear and read what they want to read. The Bible is the most violent, erotic book made in history that shows the extremes of human depravity.
