Does any other city have a sticky divisive political thread? This seems highly unusual and divisive. City data is supposed to be a forum to discuss local, factual information.
So much this. I mean look at Kalief Browder, stuck in Riker's Island for 3 years for stealing a backpack because he couldn't afford bail, 2 of which were spent in solitary confinement and 2 years after his release he hung himself.
Is this what people want? People like this who can't afford bail getting stuck in the system for years and then killing themselves?
Maybe Kalief shouldn't have stolen that backpack? Ya Think?
You TRY a person for a crime and CONVICT him and THEN and ONLY then society has the right to imprison him.
You cannot legally lock up a person for a lengthy jail time because some cop ARRESTS him.
If society chooses NOT to try him in a speedy manner (as the Constitution demands) and NOT to pay enough judges, DA's and lawyers, then he must be set free.
No, the onus is not on ME to keep him from committing crimes but rather on society as delimited by the Constitution. (Do you know the term "Inalienable God given rights?" Not my term but the Founding Fathers', the rich white guys who wrote these rules.)

We do not live under martial law YET.
Do you feel this way even way there is video proving the suspect committed the crime?
Maybe people shouldn't jaywalk or speed or any number of minor crimes people commit on a daily basis.
If you're equating stealing a backpack with rape and murder, I can't help you.
Stealing a backpack is a robbery, which is a felony not a minor crime. Jaywalking and speeding are not felonies.
