The NYPD said the city saw reductions in almost every major crime index for the month of January compared to this time last year.
According to crime statistics that the police department released Friday:
Murder are down 7.4%
Assaults are down 7.6%
Rapes are down 21.6%
Robberies are down 29%
However, shooting incidents are up 16.7 % compared to last year, and the department said there were 185 more gun arrests — an increase of 61.5%.
Because of the coronavirus, it is just guesswork why these figures went up or down. Some may simply be concidence.
If I had to guess, I would say the virus shutting down restaurants, bars and other places late at night would mean less rapes and robberies because far less people would be out late at night.
But you might think they'd go up because the streets are quieter and therefore there are more opportunities for mischief. It's not like there's no one out on the streets at all.
I keep hearing the 70s have come back...who knew the numbers were so low back then?
(Realistically, month-to-month YOYs aren't actually a great basis for overall comparisons, as they're too easily skewed by chance. But this still doesn't surprise me. Reading about crimes nearby is frightening and upsetting, and the human brain is terrible about pattern-making under those circumstances.)
When you compare 2020 to2019 you see the growing seriousness of the NYC crime problem.
Burglaries up 43.54%, murders up 46.71% and GLA up 66.43%. The burglary number should be of concern to middle-class New Yorkers because it shows that due to bail reform burglars are being put right back out on the street to commit more burglaries. If this trend continues we could see 22,000 burglaries in 2021, up 106% from 2019.
Good lord we all know these numbers the NPYD put out are utter BS. Think of all the BLM and Antifa thugs that ran roughshod over the city this Summer and never were arrested!!! Cmon folks. Crime is under reported drastically by the NYPD.
Your eyes and ears aren't deceiving you. We all know the streets are now as dangerous as they've been over the last 20 years.

If this is the case, what have you been doing to keep yourself safe? Any tips?

So you think BLM and Antifa protesters are driving up the stats for murder, assault, rapes and robberies
but the NYPD is just not recording it?
