Good news for riders?

https://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs...sts_po-organic

There is light at the end of the tunnel for subway riders and bus passengers, too. The MTA is abandoning its doomsday budget for this year.

The MTA got $4 billion from the last congressional pandemic aid package

That let the MTA avoid 40-50% service cuts until 2023

The MTA is seeking another $8 billion from the federal government. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer says the latest aid package could bring at least $6 billion to the MTA

They need fewer buses, trains, and subway cars. WFH will largely replace working in offices.

Isn’t subway ridership down like 70%? Service should be cut. Waste of $ is MTA middle name.

Trains are empty coming from Long Island. I used to take it every day and remember the ridership.
With lots of people working from home, I’d be surprised if MTA is around in 2023 at all.

That would mean cutting headcount. Not going to happen. They'll force this city into ruin before they give up their do nothing jobs.

Lol
They'll force the city and state (taxpayers) into ruin before they cut headcount.

Clearly everyone who's commented this far besides the OP doesn't actively take the train/bus.
Not everyone has office jobs....Not everyone is WFH
There are people on the trains and buses.
Besides if they cut service even more ridership will be down because who's gonna wait 30 minutes for a train or bus. Its bad enough waiting ten minutes.

I still take th bus/train. The system is bloated and inefficient. COVID didn't magically make it better. Now, the system is bloated and inefficient with even fewer riders.

There are so many EASY ways that the MTA can improve service and cut costs but they refuse because it would either force them to cut headcount or improve efficiency per worker.

How do you make the MTA make the necessary efficiency improvements and not threaten service cuts?

Honestly I think the MTA can use a management change.

MTA should outsource some functions.
