Hi everyone,

I'm moving to live on 169th Street this May and I just wonder if that neighborhood is safe? My apartment will be on Ft. Washington Ave

Thanks,

HC

You'll be fine. Right across the street from Columbia-Presbyterian.

Ft Washington is nice. Wash Heights had a very low crime rate last year. Area as a whole is leaps and bounds better than it was late 80's/early 90's. I grew up there during that time. It's like two different worlds.

Most of the crime in the area is drug-related. So there really isn't much to worry about unless your a street pharmacist.

God forbid you get sick or something bad happens, at least you'll have one of the best if not the best hospital in the city, in your vicinity.

Agreed. The worst of the heights is Broadway-Amsterdam.

I live right up the street; it is perfectly safe and you have great train access. Welcome to the neighborhood!

I lived in Washington Heights for a while with no safety problems. Bring your Spanish-English dictionary though if you plan on frequenting the local businesses... you will need it. Also bring some earplugs, WH has a well-deserved reputation as New York's noisiest hood.
