Tons of Tons like that in NJ. Slightly over $400,000 though mostly. Pretty much the whole area surrounding Staten Island up to Rt 78 at least.

Small 2 bedroom Homes....( bungalows )....near water in Brooklyn and Queens
can still be had for around $450K. May require a bit of DIY.

You should specify your other criteria. Schools? Commute to midtown? Commute to Wall Street? Outdoor space? SFH or condo?

If you expand your area to 1.5-2hrs from nyc you can get an acreage for that price. Whatever location you choose be sure to visit numerous times before buying as nyc's gentrified trash probably has set up shop there/nearby.
