I took a taxi just the other day. I used to take taxis when out. We'd bar hop a lot all over the city. Taxis were easier then Uber or Lift. They'd just be there.

This is not for New York City.

I haven't taken a cab in years and I have never taken an Uber or Lyft. I never tip a driver who smokes (I always request they don't, but some used to continue anyway) or a driver who stops to pick up a friend or member of the family or if the driver has a dirty or smelly vehicle. Others I usually tip. Another instance where I don't tip is when there is luggage and the driver merely opens the trunk and does not take out the luggage.

The thread is "Do you tip the cab driver?"
Not "If you don't actually take a taxi but please list all the reasons you don't tip if you would actually take a taxi."

I've never heard of not tipping a cab driver. And never do they help with the bags in NYC, but they do in other cities, to my great shock. To have to drag my own bags out of the cab--that's how I know I'm back home.

In the USA (including NYC) the answer is yes. But how much depends on factors like help with luggage, etc.

Taxis are dirty, which is why I stopped taking them. Have they stepped their game up in the last few years?

I'd be in them on nights out. Meaning I was drinking. We'd sometimes be in 5-6 cabs so I didn't really pay attention.
But regarding car services like uber/lift/local car services they can be dirty too. I took them recently several times a week for 3 months going to physical therapy.
