I think it really depends on the person.
For me, a doorman is a major plus, and not just for security reasons. I like the courtesy aspect of it, and that it brings a bit of friendly formality.
But I do understand your point regarding having someone watching your comings and goings.
I also had a doorman who would hit on me constantly, say creepy things to me, and ask me to hang out.
Our little eat-in kitchen is pretty good considering. The only annoyance besides limited counter space is we have one of those ubiquitous little gas ranges. I like cooking with gas but I don't like the crowding once I bring a larger pan into the proceedings.
Our apartment is on sidewalk level so we have to keep the windows curtained or at least opaque. It would be nice to be up a floor or two and not have to do that.
Space and plumbing issue in older buildings. Doesn't most new apartment construction come with built-in washers/dryers?
Nope - you do see it more recently but it's far from a given, both my present apartment and the one I'm moving into both were completed about 5 years ago and neither has in-unit. The one I'm moving into has laundry on each floor though, so that will be nice not to haul it down in the elevator.

Yeah. That's lovely. That way you can take a peek to see if it's being used without having to haul oneself up and down floors with bags full of laundry. Safer too.
There's always something wrong with the laundry room machines. But it's still better than the laundry room at my old building which were completely unusable by the time we moved out.
