Andrew Yang would like the MTA to coax riders back the subways and buses this summer with a week without fare collection in order to begin the recovery, but the MTA isn’t quite on board.
The mayoral hopeful noted the 60-degree weather on the corner of 110th Street and Central Park West in pitching his Memorial Day proposal that he believes will get New Yorkers going back to Coney Island and the Rockaways as the COVID-19 pandemic ebbs into the pages of history with the introduction of vaccines.
Lol what? How many people actually change their weekend plans over $5.50 round trip fare? And if scraping up that $5.50 was enough to keep them home, they probably won't be stimulating the economy or whatever he has in mind. If that actually happened, all we'd get is - people who were planning to travel anyway would travel, people who planned to stay home anyway would stay home, and MTA would lose a ton of money it can't quite afford to lose, and then make us all pay one way or another.

Sometimes I wonder what la-la land he lives in.
I’m going to cry tears of joy when we get a competent leader to run this city again.
This is a great idea, doesn't cost much, and is unique. It's not about $5.50, but the convenience and physiological effects of being able to just hop on a train/subway.
No other mayoral candidate has provided any sort of thinking that's outside the box.
Doubt I'm really convincing anyone though. The more I read the NYC forums, the more I think this place swings one way and won't change.

My lol was directed at the phrasing of the headline not the concept. I'll give Yang credit for effort but...
I don't think the MTA is in any kind of position to offer any kind of freebee at this point. They are bleeding & I've seen enough people just jump the turnstile left & right so...like someone already has said further up this thread, I don't think this will offer any kind of additional incentive for people who've already made up their minds whether to stay home or not.
As for this forum leaning heavily just one way, it wasn't always like that.
