Thousands of people experiencing homelessness are given housing vouchers by the city to find housing
An exclusive NY1 investigation has found those vouchers are routinely denied by landlords and realtors, which is an illegal source of income discrimination
In the first 10 months of 2019, on average every month, only a tiny slice of those with vouchers were able to find apartments
It’s been more than a year since Rebeka and her family lost their apartment in Queens. Since January 2020, they have been living in a hotel — a hotel operating as a homeless shelter for families.
"This whole year has been different," Rebeka explains. "Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving, everything is just different."
They get the voucher Coming out of a homeless shelter
The voucher expires after 5 years (or LESS). Then you need to spend another 5 years to get them out. 10,000’s in legal fees, pay off all your violations etc.
That is if you are lucky - one such “voucher houses” down the block just burned down.
Is it legal to discriminate against someone because they were in a homeless shelter?
I'd rent to a Section 8 tenant before I'd rent to college kids. The idea that being poor means you lead some sort of ”bad” lifestyle is, of course, crap. It just means that you're poor--and that some other people feel entitled to treat you like you're a problem just for existing.
Some poor people have a choice to rent outside of NYC for 600 per month, instead, they fight their way to get a section 8 voucher to live off society in the expensive City.
Often they feel that the government, their Landlord, Society owes them everything.
Try to find a welfare queen in Japan or the UAE for example.
And you won't find one in NYC either. That is a classist, racist fantasy made up by some quasi fascist Republican to give other neo-Nazis masturbation material.

Nothing is for free. This "free" market you speak of is merely a figment of your imagination with the intent of keeping you docile and working. Works for the masses.
What do you mean by docile and working? Do you feel people should not do anything and receive food, shelter and basic necessities? How will that work? I am of the impression that the world just doesn't work that way. Even animals have to work to survive.
Since when did a judge ever rule that a LL has to accept a Section 8 tenant outright? You're spinning it a bit. Can private LLs do home visits?
I'm not spinning this: In NYC, it is considered to be discrimination not renting to a section 8 family. And the California Apartment Association reminds its members that it is against California law to include “No Section 8” or similar verbiage in advertisements for rental housing. That is how Trump got into trouble with housing discrimination. He did the opposite - he said he doesn't want to rent to section 8, and was later sued.

Animals don't work for money

You think a LL would turn down a prospective tenant with a high credit score who was on Section 8? You don't need to earn a lot of money to obtain credit and maintain a good score.
