Can you believe this? Don't we all jaywalk? But how often does anyone get nabbed for it?
He Was Caught Jaywalking. He Was Almost Deported for It.
Javier Castillo Maradiaga was on his way to a family birthday party in the Bronx in December 2019 when the police arrested him for jaywalking.
So began a 15-month odyssey during which he was locked up and flown between detention centers around the United States after New York City authorities failed to honor a law meant to keep immigrants living in the country illegally from routinely falling into federal immigration authorities’ hands.
My friend got a ticket for it years back in Queens.
I cried my way out of a Jaywalking ticket in LA....
Cop: oh no common on, please don't start crying. I can't handle this.
Just go, Just go, while shaking his head.
First off, no one is "stopped and frisked" for jaywalking. On it's face, that's an incorrect statement. Even if we was in fact stopped for jaywalking, it's a summonsable infraction, not a "stop and frisk".
Secondly, it he was at risk of deportation, there's only one reason (which the article conveniently left out any mention of): his prior record.

This is a good example of people taking a story and running (or in this case, jaywalking) with it
Jaywalking is not an arrestable offense, who gets arrested for walking across a street improperly
I would love to know the details of the stop.

Thank you. I can't imagine the police don't have much bigger fish to fry than arresting people who don't "cross at the green."
