Oh, that's too bad. I know quite a few seniors who love to go to these centers.

Angela Caputo just received her second vaccination to protect her from COVID-19. For the 84-year-old Staten Island resident, it’s a shot of freedom. Caputo said, until last year, she never spent a holiday alone. But her family has been forced to keep their distance from her to keep her safe.

“It’s very lonely when you’re used to being with family. But we have to make the best of it, it could be worse,” said Caputo, a Manor Heights resident.

While nearly 60% of people in the city ages 65 to 74 years old have received at least one vaccine dose, the city has no plans to reopen its senior centers

Councilmember Margaret Chin, who chairs the city council’s aging committee, wrote to the mayor back in September calling for a timeline to reopen the centers

But seven months after Chin sent her letter, the city's Department for the Aging still cannot provide any guidance DFTA tells NY1 the agency looks forward to fully reopening centers once it is safe for older New Yorkers

There are no easy answers but this has been hard on seniors. They rely on these centers for companionship, camaraderie, activities & general social engagement. I know several who learned new skills at these places like ballroom dancing to learning another language. It keeps their mind engaged plus there are perks like free haircuts, classes and discounted meals. I hope they'll be allowed to open up soon with more & more people getting vaccinated.

There is one down the street from me. It's sad walking by it everyday.

Wonder how many of these places actually teach them something useful like learning how to use a smartphone.

(Leaning another language is useful, 7th).

They do! Along with teaching them about social media like facebook, twitter, instagram and tik tok. They offer it so they may communicate with their grandchildren (who are appreciative in kind, they'd rather engage with their grandparents than their own parents at times so I've been told). They have classes conducted by the NYPD to inform them of scams targeted at seniors & identity theft. They also teach them basic computer skills. My 80+ year old dad learned all about e-mail, ecards & filing taxes electronically from these centers. I was so surprised when I got my first birthday card electronically from my dad. I didn't know that he could to which he bristled. lol.

Some of them provide "grab and go" meals for pickup. Rude terminology, IMO. "Here! Get lost!"
