I didn't know this was becoming a thing. Good. I like bumble bees. Not swarming around me but in a controlled environment, they are fine. They make honey! It's hornets I don't like.

Bustling New York City may not seem a bee-friendly place, but its high-rise rooftops and tiny gardens are buzzing with honeymakers threatened by pesticides in rural areas.

About 2.4 million Italian honeybees waited in a white van to be taken to their new homes early Friday. It was parked near the Dakota Apartments by Central Park, where John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono has lived since 1973.

“This is the first year that we’ve done this outside The Dakota,” said Andrew Coté, president of the New York City Beekeepers Association. “We heard that Yoko likes honey.”

Coté, who founded Andrew’s Honey, drove up from Georgia to deliver the bees. The van held 200 wood and screen packages, each with about 12,000 bees. A steady stream of beekeepers lined up to pick up their 3 lb packages which cost $159 or $205, depending on when they placed their order.

Interesting indeed. Honey has also become insanely expensive. I only get sick once every so many years. When I do, I buy a very good honey from Germany for tea (Lagnesse Creamy Country Honey). Delicious.

Queens Botanical Gardens have their own brand (got their own beehive/colony). I bought it. Tres expensive. For a tiny jar it's 10 bucks. But you can't beat good honey. You can purchase locally made honey at various farmer markets throughout the city. They're becoming expensive over the years however because honey bees are dying off as the article states. It's become a global problem/shortage.

Albeit true that it is a global issue, it looks like the honey industry is alive and well here. I would love to see more of this along with rooftop hydroponic gardening. A lot of residential rooftops in the city are wasted space.

There's a guy that sells honey locally down in Union Square. Andrew's Honey I think it's called (happens to be the guy mentioned in the article). I heard he's a real jerk though, so I wouldn't but from him for that reason, local or not.

It's been a problem for a good 10 years now. The last bottle of honey I bought was around $10.00, but that was years ago. I buy a lot of local organic maple syrup for yogurt and oatmeal and such. Some really good ones made here in NY. Doc's Maple Syrup and Rocky Ridge Maple Syrup. It's hard to find 100% American made maple syrup not mixed with Canadian maple syrup. The golden standard in my book though is Butternut Mountain Farm. Soooo good, but that's from Vermont.

My father got a hive for the backyard. I honestly don't know what came of it; should have asked him when I was in Brooklyn last weekend. I do recall him saying that the first year he wasn't going to collect any honey but that was going to change in years after that. I will say that the bees were not as much of a nuisance as I thought they would be. From what I recalled they really only bothered you if you went near their hive.
