Maya Wiley is promising to hire 1,000 additional teachers as part of an effort to create smaller classes in New York City public schools, becoming the first of the leading mayoral candidates to put forth a plan that addresses the system's historically overcrowded classrooms.

I remember having 35 classmates in my classes in "olden" days. No one told us we were being underserved. Teachers were respected so order was maintained.

I went to both private school and parochial school, and I don't even think there was 35 of us in the entire grade either time. Catholic school prolly was like 40 of us in the entire grade. Just for perspective. Public maybe hit 30 in a class once or twice in elementary and for HS, it usually hovered between 25-30. Larger numbers of students in classes work best in college, not first grade.

Smaller classes are better. If kids get the attention they need, they are far less likely to fall through the cracks. And use some of that money to pay teachers what they deserve.

You don't even know how much of your taxes go to NYC public schools right now, you couldn't even tell me a dollar figure

Whatever. I went to a crappy public school and (on scholarship) a rich private school. From class sizes of 30-35 to class sizes of 10-15. Watch what the rich people give their own kids, and don't let them tell you everyone else doesn't need it/won't benefit from it.
