Bird watching has soared in popularity during the pandemic, with pent up Brooklynites taking up the hobby en masse as a safe way to get outdoors while social distancing — leading many to discover a passion for the rich feathered wildlife around them, according to a seasoned borough birder.
“There’s this impetus to see what’s there and what haven’t I seen all along,” Dennis Hrehowsik, president of the Brooklyn Bird Club, told Brooklyn Paper. “You’re looking at all this stuff that was there this whole time under your nose and you didn’t realize it.”
The century-old organization, which does work to advance the hobby, has seen its membership roughly doubled during the past year to almost 400 birders, according to Hrehowsik.
For those interested in taking up the avian pastime, there are many great places in Brooklyn to watch them at different times of the year.
My wife and I have been in to it for almost 20 years …
These were shot on a Nikon z6 with a Nikon 200 to 500mm lens and a 2x teleconverter making it a 400 to 1000mm…..
These birds were pretty far away .
Yeah, I can tell. And I was just going to ask you what camera you used because those pics are quality. I'm not surprised they are available for sale. Whenever I go to the Queens Botanical Gardens (at least pre pandemic), I would see all these photographers walking around with these huge cameras. Some of their prints are fantastic. May I ask, did you get professional training (attend classes) or just picked it up as a hobby.
I also enjoyed the pics you took of Kissena Park over the years.
We are are both self taught ….it is funny because my wife is the most un technical photographer I know in the sense of ask her what all the buttons actually do on the camera and she won’t know .
But she just knows to do this I turn this or I push that …she shoots a lot in manual and nails exposure ranges very well .
I wrote a bunch of tutorials up on the city data data photography forum years ago explaining some of our techniques.
If you ever get in to photography I will find them for you .
Today we shot at the planting fields in oyster bay ….
