Culture, interesting food and diversity are buzzwords leftists use to justify their sad little pathetic city lives.
that's some of the stuff that keep the wealthy here, this so called "cultural stuff" (leftist amusements)
gourmet restaurants, Lincoln Center, Broadway shows, designer shops, Carnegie Hall, galleries, museums, "ethnic" festivals etc etc
so what the real Americans stuff do do when you get out of the city as opposed to this leftist fufu cultural stuff and appetizers being sold as meals?
what are some of the real American activities besides fishing, golf, target practice, what else?
What about camping and hiking?
It seems like camping with the family is American but hiking is kind of pinko -environmentalist.
And how would you classify going to the beach in the Hamptons? Is that conservative or leftist?
I can't seem to wrap my mind around living in a midrise building with a chance of bugs and/or noisy neighbors, along with smaller living space + higher cost of living. Do most people just get used to it, and all the other perks of the city outweigh those negatives? Coming from Chicago, I find Chicago to be pretty boring, and too laid back, but at the same time I can't afford the same kind of apartment (highrise) in NYC. Love the energy of NYC though.
It's absolutely worth it. It blows any other city in the US away--if I'm being honest and no offense to any other city.
What you are referring to are minor nuisances for the huge amount of perks of living in New York City.
You are paying for access to the best--or just about the best--of anything and everything, really, when you pay the rent to live here.
I may not want the most incredible Italian food all the time, or I may not visit the best museums in the country all the team, or I may not have the most incredible sushi, the best Korean, the best polish food, or want to visit a different cool bar in a different cool neighborhood all the time.
But when you do want any of that, you just step out your front door, or get on a quick train ride, and you are there.
That is what you are paying for: convenience to the best of the best and the diversity of the world at your doorstep.
BTW the quality of life is not really reduced very much at all, especially after this month. In mid May, dining and bar restriction curfews are completely lifted, and by July 1st, all of NYC curfews on anything are lifted.
Great time to be here--the energy is back and it is getting incredibly vibrant again in most neighborhoods.

A lot of what I'm about to talk about is how it was pre-covid, and how it will likely return some time after Covid blows out. Right now a lot of it is on hold. Of course, this is FAR from an NYC specific phenomenon, but it's more pronounced here.
And I'm mostly comparing to suburban areas (which is what I think the OPs point of comparison is.) There other other urban areas the off some of the same as NYC, but likely in the same volume.
Do you want to build a career in the is any of the several major industries where NYC is the center of their universe, where you have a choice of working for several major players in those fields (finance, law, media, advertising, medicine, technology, arts, etc.), you're better off in NYC.
Are you single, and want to have a social life where there's a high density of whoever you want to meet? You're better off in NYC. Would you like to go out and have a few drinks, not have to drive to do it? That's much easier in NYC certainly than any suburban area, and likely some urban areas (thinking specifically of very auto centric cities like LA.)
Want someplace walkable where you're just not walking past untold blocks of suburban houses with no one on the street, but with entertaining street life, and amenities immediately at hand? You're better off in NYC.
There are good reasons NYC got so popular and expensive.
We have finally decided to move in the future. We travel alot. Ticket prices and flight availability are easily infinitely better from NYC. We may just have to do connecting flights through NYC to the Europe and Far East. It's insane the difference in prices

Conservatives go hiking. They just carry a hunting rifle with them.

that's right. Going into the woods with a gun is an all American activity, you can shoot a deer for food or sport.
But going there solely to appreciate "nature" and fall in love with trees, that's leftist-environmentalist stuff.
It's the gun that makes you American.
We have to dominate nature and make it work for us not section off land for the sake of a couple of owls and tree humpers.

Yeah good thing for leftist Teddy Roosevelt or we wouldn't have all those national parks huh? Or all the millions and millions of dollars collected specifically for conservation from every single hunting and fishing related purchase nationwide due to the Pittman-Robertson Act?
A greatly under appreciated leftist hobby is speaking about things they know nothing about.
