Interesting read. I've been. I wasn't all that impressed. Bloomberg passed it up but De Blasio moved right in.

It’s one of the sweetest deals in all of New York: an official residence that was dubbed the city’s “little White House” by Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. He thought the description would appeal to Fiorella LaGuardia, the “rubbery little crusader” of large ambition who’d come out on top in the 1934 mayoral election. So the Power Broker took control of the former country home of prosperous Scottish-born merchant Archibald Gracie, intending to use it to raise the stature of the office. He fixed it up with heating and electricity and a fresh coat of exterior paint. Rugs were laid and draperies hung. Then Moses proudly offered it to the stumpy son of immigrants who had just become New York City’s leading man.

LaGuardia turned it down. lol.

To be fair, I'm sure Bloomberg's personal residence was 100X better than anything Gracie Mansion had to offer, while the same could not be said for de Blasio's Park Slope townhouse.

That and the income he generated from renting out his townhouse which prompted (I forget if it was The Post or the Daily News) to label him "NYC's Landlord Mayor".

Yah. And...! at market rate. Which caused static with some because of his tooting "affordable housing" and "landlords should offer adjusted rates" blah, blah. I guess that doesn't apply to ...his property! lol.

Very true.

To your other point, I never thought of it that way. There's something seemingly sleazy about them taking up residence in a government property and then profiting from renting out their actual home (and at market rate, at that). Still, the Brooklyn neighbors are probably thankful that they moved as the security presence/headache is lessened vs. if they lived in Park Slope still.

Well, we know why Bloomberg turned up his nose - his own townhouse is presumably far grander.
