Hope this works out. The city's economy needs to rebound. We're all going to be in a world of hurt if it doesn't.

Volunteers signed up to help bring back tourism to Chinatown.

It has been no secret that Chinatown and Little Italy businesses have been suffering from the lack of tourism and all-around foot traffic in the area. With no out-of-town visitors, storefronts have been left abandoned and obscured by graffiti smeared shutters. Although the vaccine is reaching more arms than ever and the city’s reopening is imminent, life in the Lower Manhattan community remains far from 2019 levels of pedestrian movement.

In addition to the nearly endless choice of eateries from which to dine, Chinatown is also home to an amass of history. From notorious tales of the 19th century neighborhood labeled Five Points to becoming a bustling site for cultural entertainment, a group of volunteers are hoping to use this history to entice people back to the community, and, in turn, the vast array of struggling shops by offering guided tours.

The men and women from Big Apple Greeter who will be hosting outings are not alike, in fact many do not hail from Chinatown, however, they all share one very important aspect: a passion for the area’s historical importance. The Big Apple Greeter group has been in operation for almost three decades, and in that time has built up a strong relationship with residents over the city. In an effort to simulate the once-bustling district, the group is now offering tours free of charge.

Very interesting. I have noticed renewed interest in Chinatown from non-Asians. For example there are a lot of Hispanics and Black immigrants now doing their food shopping at open markets. They stick mainly to the seafood and vegetable markets. The staff are also multi-lingual now instead of like the old days. In fact, many Chinatown store owners have large numbers of Mexicans and other Central Americans working for them now. The old school White customers who never left are Jews who for some odd historical quirk have developed an acquired taste for Chinese food and can often be found eating foods forbidden by Kosher laws like shrimp and pork dumplings. I guess that is a guilty pleasure for them.

American Jews have customarily frequented Asian restaurants on Christmas day, because in the past those were among the few places that remained open on the Christian holiday that afforded Jews a place to go on the workday off. That's where the urban legend of Jews having an "acquired taste for Chinese food" comes from.

While Asian restaurants are not certified kosher and are thus off-limits for the Orthodox, many less strictly observant Jews nevertheless will order vegetarian dishes in Asian restaurants, so as not to mix meat with dairy. Many other Jews who are barely observant at all nevertheless tend to eschew pork.

All good points. I used to work in my family's restaurant. We had many Jewish customers. And no, it wasn't Kosher certified. Most of the Jews were secular so did not care. Others were "selectively Kosher" which according to them meant what they ate depended upon what company they currently kept. Haha. Out on lunch break from the office? Shrimp fried rice. Out with the mother in law on Saturday afternoon? Got to observe the Sabbath.

LOL! There are also those among us who, while "selectively kosher" outside the home, nevertheless "keep kosher" in the home environment.
