Anyway - the alley has been that way for 40 years.
"Negative energy" = I don't like your viewpoint.

Let's say it's been like that for 40 years ( lets put aside the fact that so many things have changed in this city over 40 years but things have stayed EXACTLY the same in this one spot). Is that supposed to make it better?

Streetview
I'm confused. I clicked the link and looked at the streetview image. Even scrolled a bit. What are we supposed to be seeing there?

I don’t think stating a fact necessarily implies acceptance or approval. He’s been living there for years and has first hand knowledge. He never said it was okay.

Stepping in a pile of dog**** once a month is different than stepping in it everyday. There are degrees to things like crime. Stating "it's always been like that" doesn't mean anything. There have always been murders in NYC but obviously weyre better off now than in the 90s.

I can't imagine that crime has dropped all across the city over the past 20+ years but things in this one plaza have stayed EXACTLY the same.

She said that while things have happened at the plaza for many years, the situation did worsened after the coronavirus pandemic began.

“From the many years that I’ve been here, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve called 911 and I lost count of how many times people got shot across the street,” Martinez said.

Jose Santana, the owner of a nearby barbershop, corroborated Martinez’s story and even showed NY1 a surveillance video of a recent assault that took place in front of his shop. Santana is also worried about his safety and wears a piece of apparel intended to protect vital organs in the event of a stabbing while at work.

“It’s stab-proof. It’s leather, full leather,” Santana said. “It helps for the stabbings. Out here, you got to be careful.”

Wow. Now I remember why you’ve been on my ignore list forever. Fixed.

Not the point. My point is that it has been like this for 40 years and only now it is getting news coverage. We should be civilized enough to the point where it is agreed that this is definitely an issue, I dont see why this is even questioned. Have you ever been to the neighborhood?

Nobody's advocating degeneracy. We live in a capitalist society so people capitalize on everything - money, emotions, etc. Thats why we're getting so many whiny ass threads. People don't even know why they're sad or mad anymore. People shoulda took advantage of that ThriveNYC, can't say it wasnt there

Yeah, I agree. It's more like 53 years and it's been like that since they first built it. I remember what that piece of land was like before they put anything over there.

Well, it's a shame that it took that long for it to be addressed but better late than never. Since it's now being highlighted by the media taking notice (probably because "there are projects included in a $300 million revitalization of the area adjacent to the plaza & said projects could be jeopardized, even by a perception that the area isn't a desirable place to live") there's now an incentive to improve the plaza and the powers that be (drum roll) will make some changes! One can hope.

I feel for the barber shop owner that has to resort to wearing a bullet proof vest just to make a decent living. It shouldn't be like that.

"What Alexander wants to do in an effort to address this, is connect more people in this community with the resources they need to thrive.

“What can we do to not ostracize them, but see what the issues are? What the needs are so we can help you,” Alexander said.

Martinez believes what Alexander has suggested would be a start.

“We need to have programs for our youth, programs for adults that are out right now with no job, no placement, nowhere to be,” Martinez said."

Oh please. This is nothing new and it's not new to the media either. That whole area started to die by the mid 1960s. There have been "programs" for the unemployed and youth for more than a half century for the residents. The area became a dumping ground when they put nursing homes and low-income projects in that part of Far Rock. Far Rock HS used to be one of the best high schools in NYC with a lot of prominent alumni. After a half century of decline, it was closed.
