Just bought a new car in Queens. Y'all got any tips for anything car related like parking, insurance, convienience, etc.
I'm 49 been driving in Queens since I'm 18 years old in 1990. Here ya go:
- Theft...you can buy an alarm system but I never have. What I do use is the old school "Club" on the steering wheel. It does wonders. Thieves see it, then move on to the next car.
- Insurance...I use Progressive but have also used Geico. All pretty decent. You will pay a lot just because you live in Queens which is high rate of accidents thanks to many, many bad drivers (mostly foreigners who didn't grow up with cars).
- Do not EVER leave any money or items in your car at night. Thieves will try to break in.
- Parking sucks just about everywhere. Even quiet neighborhoods like Whitestone/Bayside are now overcrowded as a result of increase illegal immigration. Not much else to say. It's a nightmare in the Winter with snow. The parking at a by a fire hydrant is a good idea, as mentioned before.
Having a car in NYC is great. Especially Queens. Just yesterday I felt like having lunch at Jones Beach. I was out there in 20 minutes. I do most of my driving at night, however. Queens is way over populated vs. 1990 when I started driving. Let me also warn you that since covid, there is rampant speeding on highways. The Van Wyck and LIE are death traps as is the Cross Island and Clearview. Personally, I think it has a lot to do with younger people smoking weed and then driving. They have no fear on the road. I've never seen as many wrecks and flipped cars in my life compared to the last 2 years or so. The roads are out of control.
And, most importantly, if you get pulled over by the NYPD just shut ya mouth and listen and speak when spoken to...and you'll likely be ok They are lenient these days knowing most folks are short on money.

I don't think it's weed (I'm no fan of it either).
It's just high powered cars. The average car has way more horsepower and torque then even cars 10 years ago.
Let's be honest. Most of the reckless/dangerous drivers on the roads are usually in "performance" cars.
you gotta move it everyday
keep it gassed up
make sure you're parked in the right spot or the traffic cops hit you
pending congestion pricing
insurance every month
worry about it being broken into
its more of a liability than a asset... but that's just me
Load up all your stuff, and drive your car out of NYC, and NYS as soon as you can.
Well I am going to upstate this Sunday lol. Maybe ill check out how life is there.
