I am not surprised.

A consultant repeatedly urged public housing managers to overhaul decrepit airflow systems in 240 complexes across the city. But NYCHA officials, who insisted there was no danger, did nothing for weeks as the virus raged.

If you want competent management, you gotta pay for it.

Most construction was halted by the city during the pandemic. Most of the workers who would have been available to work on the project stayed home in fear of catching covid. A huge construction project like that isn't approved and funded simply by sending a note. It may take months and years to get the relevant authorities and individuals to sign off on it.

There is no money for the buildings upkeep. They should demolish them or sell them at market rate.

Give the truly disabled housing vouchers for private housing.
.other able bodied people who just want to sit in free houses for generations should be shipped to Alabama or somewhere equally cheap. Build affordable home and find a way to fund and turn over ownership for who are interested.

Those not interested can find a way to afford housing just like everyone else.

These systems are only exhaust systems for bathrooms and kitchens that don't have windows. They don't circulate the air, like if you were on a subway car, or on an airplane. All they do is exhaust the bad air & moisture out.

Point being is that even if the ducts were cleaned out and fans repaired like they were supposed to, it's not like these systems were designed to supply the apartments with fresh air.

My friend died in her NYCHA apartment in February 2021. She had been complaining of mold. She was dead for 4 days before they found her. Mold is toxic. Her family should sue. She was also a veteran.
