I spent 15+ years in Chicago where it was very easy to figure people out just by looking at them. You could tell which Midwest state they came from, their political/religious leanings, socioeconomic status and even their Big 10 school all just from a quick glance.. Ok, I'm exagerating, but you catch my drift.

But here in NYC I find it near impossible to figure people out. Is this a billionaire or an average Joe? I can't even figure out which country people are from, much less whether they are local or transplants. And everything else is up in the air too. Of course most will become apparent within a few minutes of chatting with them.

Anyways maybe it's just me and I need to spend more time here to figure them out . I've only been here a few years. Or is this simply the nature of the city?

Why was it so much easier in Chicago?

In Chicago large segments of the population fall into very easily identifiable groups. In other words, many many people look, think and act alike!

Well then there's your answer. NYC is not a one size fit all. Better know the measurements kid.

You'll be aight, just dont worry about fitting in. Just be you

You have lived in NYC long enough. One of the things you learn as a NY'er is reading people ....and quickly.

A key skill that NYers have is sizing up potential nut jobs who will act violently towards you. But we ignore people who talk crazy so long as they stay non-physical.

You're never going to be 100% accurate, but as a few have and will mention, just be aware and pay attention to individuals who make erratic movements, particularly subway platforms.

Good Luck...
