That doesn't mean we don't live in a civilized society. If you want to see various levels of "civilized society" go to countries/regions where the rule of law is whoever is carrying the biggest gun.

Nonesense. There are gradations within social classes.

The poster had it exactly right. People dependent on government handouts will eat whatever **** the politicians force feed them as long as the handouts keep flowing. First they buy their vote and then they hold them hostage.
Division is one way they keep you docile

Classes are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, only plebeians and patricians, thats really it if you really have the desire to classify people by their worth

US has the highest rate of incarceration on the planet, guess that makes us the most civilized

Haha

Who is "they"? "They" only exist for people who spend too much time on the internet thinking they've unlocked some secret conspiracies within society.

Of course classes are relevant. They each have their own interests.

My self interest is different than the welfare class in NYC.

This is a good discussion but we are getting off topic. I would be more than happy to continue the discussion over a thread on class division in NYC if you start it.

Every thread eventually gets off topic if you look close enough.

Class division in NYC is between those that give more (in taxes) then they take and those that take (usually a lot) more than they give.

NYC is close to becoming a city where the majority of voters are those receiving freebies from the NYC taxpayers. This is the price of low voter turnout in 2013 and 2017. The NYC Middle Class Voter needs to get off it's collective rear end and start voting! Especially NYC Homeowners and condo owners who are truly invested in NYC.

I want my term to catch on: dependapatamus! It's an Army thing, but it fits here. My iPhone has even learned it for auto-correct!

Meh, go read about Tammany Hall and come back

For good measure, go look on Wikipedia at the list of NYS politicians who have served prison time

It's all intertwined

Lastly, "middle class" is a coined term, it doesn't exist

Of course middle class exists. The middle class is the meat of the American miracle and Karl Marx's worst nightmare, so obviously the elite class of AOC and her communist wannabes have utter contempt for them. You can't have a revolution of malcontents and dependent poor people if you have a huge middle class of people with everything they need

Lol, all this "I need to belong to a group" nonsense

What is it with the incessant need for humans to categorize themselves based on material possessions, its all irrelevant

There's reams of data and research on the emergence of the middle class going back to late 14th, early 15th century Europe when it first emerged. Loosely defined, the middle class is the bulk of people who have the means to enjoy leisure time outside of work but are still dependent upon their own labor for sustenance.

There's plenty of room to argue exactly what factors constitute middle class in different time periods and locations, but it's absurd to state that no middle class exists.
