NYC had one of the healthiest and robust increases of any major city in the US.
Very strong growth overall.
I think there is a small yet vocal group of people who would enjoy watching a city like NYC collapse and fail. Not sure of the motives, other than the fact that New York City has been the #1 large city in the US for over 200 years.
I think when you are #1, it creates a lot of haters trying to come at you. LOL Typical human behavior.
If I recall, the census forms arrived fairly early in the year. Results may be different if they had been later as the bulk of people leaving came mid-year or later. Not that I think nyc is dying or anything like that (I don't).

Ever noticed that a lot of people that talk smack about New York City don't even live here. Usually people only talk smack about something when they are dealing with jealousy
I think it's likely that median income for NYC has gone up between the censuses and to a greater degree than the national average. That outer borough gentrification has been pretty fierce especially in Brooklyn where the population grew the most.

I think NYC is very lucky that most of those who fled filled out the online census forms before they moved out. I don't think that NYC is dying - yet. But we lose more of the tax base every year, and I still think most of the new residents showing up in the 2020 census numbers are illegal immigrants here for a free ride on the NYC taxpayer.
