Sasha is an 11-month-old cougar. She was living at a home in the Bronx since she was around eight weeks old. Last week, the homeowner surrendered the 80-pound female cougar, and she's now heading to a wildlife refuge in Arkansas.

“They were starting to recognize that, you know, she was a wild animal and she was not thriving in a domestic environment inside a home or an apartment, so they knew that they had to make some changes for her and for themselves so that she can continue to have the best life option,” said Kelly Donithan, the director of animal disaster response at The Humane Society of the United States.

The Humane Society of the United States, along with the Department of Environmental Conservation and the NYPD, helped bring Sasha to the Bronx Zoo, where she stayed for the weekend before heading to her new home.

This is not the first time we’ve heard of such a large house pet in the city. There was Ming, a tiger living in a Harlem apartment who was rescued in 2003.
