I have the impression that in recent years the city has endeavored to plant species of trees whose roots grow in a more downward direction rather than spreading out horizontally and buckling sidewalks. Any arborists on here?

I hope so. We had a fair amount of trees in our Queens neighborhood growing up, and the sidewalks around them were often cracked and lifted. We loved it since we would get a little air when riding over them on our bikes, but I'm sure people with canes, grocery carts and strollers probably didn't appreciate the obstacles the same way. They also made shoveling the snow a bit more of a pain than shoveling on level sidewalks.
Why wouldn't you want a tree??? They create oxygen, they block noise...
The destroy sidewalks, they shed leaves, acorns, pollen, buds and other crap on your car, and they fall down during storms. In the last five years or so five trees and large branches have come down on my block and across the street within three houses of mine. Luckily they didn’t crush any cars but all the trees had to be removed and all were blocking the street and/or sidewalk.
I don’t hate trees. They belong in parks and by people who want them.

How many trees actually fall in a storm in NYC? Come on. If parks were the only place where trees were planted you’d probably have triple the deaths from cancer and other crap from living, or rather, existing in a totally mineralized environment. To think otherwise is just weird in the extreme.
Why are people so anti tree. Tree makes everything better .
Right!
I think it's some people's goal to fight nature at every turn, and come out on top as "the winner."
Trees make everything better--clean the air, provide much needed greenery in a huge city, attract birds, give homes for squirrels, insects, etc., and beautify the block.
Those talking about the sidewalk being lifted up by the roots, well, it may not be ideal, but it also has a bit of charm to it, I think.

Yes, I believe this is true. No more maples, or worse, oaks.

Aren’t property owners in NYC responsible for maintaining the sidewalk in front of their properties, and also potentially liable for accidents like slips and falls?

How many healthy kids under 18 die from covid? None yet schools are mandating they get vaccinated just in case one in a million could die from it.
You obviously don’t get out much if you think you are more likely to have a car drive into your house than have a tree fall on it. After Sandy and Isaias there were many trees that came down on houses. No cars were driven into homes. Every major storm has trees falling down. Cars may go out of control onto property once in awhile but very rarely drive into a home. Where are you seeing all these cars driving into homes?
If you make a habit of pruning branches on city trees then you are breaking the law. If you are talking about trees planted on your property that is not the topic.
How often do we have major storms like Sandy? I drive around alot. My husband and I have a running joke to point out how many walls/fences we could spot that were damaged due to a vehicle running into them. You would be surprised how many we saw once we started actively looking for it.
The house we just sold had a car run into the wall twice according to the neighbors. No trees ever fell on the house even though we had numerous trees in the yard and on the sidewalk.
You can request your trees to be pruned and they do show up. I know I used to see them pruning trees every spring. They also clean the manhole drains. They cleaned mine every spring. They never cleaned the neighbor's one block over. Every time it rained she had a huge puddle by her sidewalk due to poor drainage.
I prune branches hanging over my yard that look unhealthy.
I have never had a problem. I also fertilized the trees and watered them. Compared to the people who killed the trees as soon as they planted them and all the drive by shootings, stabbings and larceny, the city is not worried about my tree pruning.
There is a reason who developers are now required to submit architectural plans with designated landscape design/green space for residential builds in upscale neighborhoods.
There is nothing comparable to a beautiful tree lined block/neighborhood. It is also healthy for the residents. No wonder there are so many illnesses in NYC. Nature gives us trees to purify the air for free and provide drainage systems. And everyone hates them with a passion.
It is actually one of the few agencies in the city that are very responsive and timely with requests.
