Place has been infested with rodents, trash and giving off smells for years now.

Sadly it seems as if owner (81 years old) is alone in this world and or at least no family is stepping up to hold up their end. Hoarding just doesn't happen in multi-family but private houses as well. Thing is once problems build on one property they can spready very fast to those in back and or either side if not entire block.

Guy has lived in house most or all of his life. After parents died (original owners) he got the place which is common enough on SI. But this is just all sorts of crazy.

Never saw rats until started going into city. Am not saying they didn't exist on SI, but no one I knew ever saw one.

Opossums and muskrats, yes that we had in our area, but not Norway rats.

Keep seeing two cars parked in driveway. Even at 81 the owner could still be driving (don't ask), but who owns the other? If it is family or even a tenant why aren't they helping this guy? Could also be owner is renting out his two parking spots in driveway, who knows.

Looking at Google street maps reinforces what many who grew up or know SI; there's always one or two homes on block that don't hold up their end, bringing value of properties around them down.

Sometimes it is just eejits who never owned and or otherwise don't have a clue about taking care of a home and property. Other times it is older or elderly homeowners who just don't have strength and frame of mind to get out there and do the work.

That house is so out of place with those on either side. It went up in 1955 and resembles much of what would come in 1960's after that GD VZNB was built and the land rush/building boom began on SI.

Here's what house looked like in 1982:

yes, that is the tax picture, our home in SI had it also before my parents got the new windows and re-constructed the front facade.

in regards to the 2 cars, I also noticed that, I was thinking maybe someone is renting a spot, but your right, all the times I did the street vies, those same two cars are there.
well, once the man croaks, hopefully it will get razed and a new one built.

Really cannot imagine anyone else living in that house full of rats, garbage and filth. SI Advance in news coverage of fire back in 2013 nor recent article about (continuing) rodent issue mentions anyone else living at that house besides owner.

Those cars look rather new and well taken care of, someone is using them frequently, and highly doubt it is an 81 year old man with mobility issues.

That area of Brighton Heights like many others on North Shore was largely developed back in 1800's through early 1900's (say to 1930's or 1940's). Most homes have driveways and garages, but some either don't or family needs more space.

There are also good number of two family homes on that street, and not all houses have garage/driveway space for three or four cars.

Yeah, eventually current owner will pass on, but that house won't be sold until his estate is settled. Anyone attempting a tear down or even just a renovation will have to bait that place for long time to ensure all rodents are gone. That or maybe fumigate or something. Otherwise those rats are going to scatter to adjacent properties.

Effing shame people have to live that way. Can't even go outside and enjoy your property much less let kids play in yard.

There's another property not far from this one over on City Blvd where neighbors are going through heck as well.

House likely was rebuilt after fire thanks to insurance. Rats gnawing on wires are a common cause of fires inside buildings or anywhere else. Wonder what official cause was listed for 2013 fire at this place.

Either poor guy as family that don't give a rat's a$$ about him and property (pardon pun), or there is nobody meaning city will have to get involved if guy does have issues taking care of himself and his property.

That is last thing anyone should wish on anyone else. Once things go to surrogate court and a guardian is assigned for those deemed unable to handle their affairs, that's all she wrote.

Either by probate or guardian, estates or whatever have been looted by pubic administrators assigned to protect assets. In many instances such estates become private piggy-banks for public administrators, their cronies and lap dogs.

All Gods creatures serve a meaningful purpose on this planet.

Whether worshiped eaten or despised humans are ultimately the judge jury and executioner of all animals.
In this example where a person who means well has built a bond with a rodent and is trying to live in a
neighborhood where the views of his neighbors are very much not the same. Understood.

I knew a Cat Lady whose home was an eyesore and wreaked of putrid felines for years.
Helping to catch and spade was only a temporary remedy. When she finally passed her home
was leveled and replaced by a beautiful structure and healthy cats were sent to a no kill shelter
while the sickly sadly met their demise.

Many folks said good riddance but from my point of view she went to cat heaven for giving shelter
and a longer than normal life to the so many unwanted that would have otherwise been euthanized.

The same goes for rats. Pestilence of society. Friends to few. Out of Sight and Out of mind for now...............
