It would sure beat the "queen" Leona Helmsley.

Do you think they'll have to sit through a co-op interview?

A princess is set to be wed, but it’s no fairy tale
Anyone who dreams of being a princess should probably have a chat with Princess Mako of Japan. On Friday, the agency that manages the affairs of Japan’s royal family announced that the princess, the 29-year-old niece of Emperor Naruhito, would marry her fiance, a commoner named Kei Komuro, on October 26th.
If you’re expecting pomp and circumstance, prepare to be disappointed. There will be no royal wedding. Instead, Princess Mako intends to renounce her royal heritage and settle into a normal life in New York, where Komuro (29) works in a law office after studying at Fordham University in the city.

Princess Mako and commoner fiancé
If you believe Japan’s notorious gossip “weeklies,” the princess is eloping with a con man who will be whisking her off to an uncertain future in New York City — close to penniless.
Those who support Mako, however, see her decision to marry Komuro and move to the US as an opportunity to escape the stuffy, patriarchal world of her family and its Chrysanthemum Throne — which, according to imperial law, only males can inherit.

My wife (who is Japanese) joked that we are doing the reverse of them and will likely have more money than them since she rejected the royal payout. We are moving to Japan to live in a safer country and have our investments stretch further - They are moving here to escape stuffy Japanese culture and be treated normally and without criticism associated with their past...

That being said I am a Native NYer and this is not the same city I grew up in. All the original culture is gone. For Mako, Japanese society is suffocating for a Woman. She will do OK here because any downsides of NY for her will be completely irrelevant, because of the massive pressure off her. NY media could care less and she is just a regular person here.

Who would think that a Black Man would be treated better in Japan and a Japanese Princess is treated better in the USA...She will be given a cushy job at a museum or cultural institution leveraging her high society network however, so I doubt she'll be counting pennies. For many expat Japanese they prefer the safety risk in exchange for freedom. Japan is incredibly suffocating if you have to work to survive in the society, and if you look Japanese. But if you are a financially independent foreigner like me, you get many of the benefits minus the expectations. Crazy world we live in.
