That was just like 2 years ago. Before the pandemic.
The $1 slice today is only at the 2bros crappy places. I'm talking about every pizza places in NYC back in 90s served $1-2 slice and the cheese doesn't fall apart like the crappy pizzas that are thin on cheese and dough.
The apparent culprits: a labor shortage and inflation.
The $1 slice—by some New Yorkers considered to be as much of a local cultural landmark as the Statue of Liberty, Central Park and the Theater District are—is in peril.
According to a recently-published report by the New York Post, in fact, the price of making pizza is soaring—forcing shops to move away from the popular $1 slice offering to account for much-chronicled supply-chain issues, national labor shortages and inflationary food costs.
In the most demonstrable result of the troubles related to the market, 2 Bros. Pizza, one of the most recognizable $99 cent pizza shops in New York, is currently selling slices for $1.50—although their ubiquitous marquee continue to advertise the $1 slice.
The root of the issue, according to Lenny Giordano, the owner of Mona Lisa Pizzeria in Staten Island, is a labor shortage coupled with an inflation likely due to the monthly payments given out by the federal government to folks out of jobs during the pandemic.
I'm not sure about all the other places - it does seem like the $1 slices have been disappearing, but if you are ever looking for a decent $1 slice, there is still a spot on the corner of 46th and Lexington that sells by the slice and even full pies.
Most of the dollar slices of the past several years were pretty unpalatable to me. It was one thing or another that was off about them whether it's the cheese, the sauce, the crust, or all of the above. I can't recall a single even remotely satisfying dollar slice that was actually had for a $1. I'm not talking about great or even good for the money, just adequate.
Looks like it's headed that way. One of the 99 cent pizza places closed near MetroTech. Another one opened right across the street, although it's filled to the brim with kids so I usually avoid it.
Still a dollar slice place on 6th between 38th and 39th closer to 40th.
Go get 'em!
Now where can I get a 2 dollar Sabrett?
