I don't know about these people but... it's on!

https://www.brooklynpaper.com/coney-...lunge-returns/

It’s a beloved (and daring) holiday tradition!

Frigid swimmers will head to the shores of Coney Island Beach on Jan. 1 to celebrate the new year, as the beloved Polar Bear Plunge returns after a COVID-related cancelation last year.

“It’s a fantastic way to start the new year, a plunge in the cold ocean will really leave everything behind that you want to leave behind,” said Dennis Thomas, president of the Coney Island Polar Bear Club, “and I know a lot of people want to get past this year.”

The 2022 Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge— the 119th edition of the fundraiser — will go on similarly as it did in 2019, after going virtual due to the pandemic last year with the club’s president expecting approximately 3,000 participants, 10,000 spectators with a goal of $80,000 in donations.

Always got a kick out of watching these folks, but no way in hell would I actually do that. I hate the cold with passion while dry. No way am I taking a dip into the frigid Atlantic

Facts. You can't pay me to do that. Ugh. But, it's supposed to be "invigorating". Yeah, right...

Polar bear jumps are outstanding for the mitochondria. Once a body hits the cold water, it is the equivalent of doing HIIT (high intensity interval workouts). The body produces growth hormones (HRT.) HRT is what keeps people young and disease free. When done consistently, you can literally unsubscribe from the gym and still be in shape. In fact, if one cannot do the polar bear jump, they should take extremely cold showers regularly.

If I were closer I'd do it. But the train ride home with wet hair is too much to bear

No thanks! Last month I had to take cold showers for a few days until my new water heater was installed. That was enough cold showers to last a lifetime.

I have a friend who told me about cold showers. Full body freeze therapy is used by some athletes now also (WWE Undertaker used this before retiring.)

I hate cold so the gym will have to suffice for me though.

I swim out there every weekend all year round. (Not dip, actually swim...). The plunge is fun event, though people tend to just run in and out if they aren't used to the cold. I fully believe in the health benefits of cold water swimming.
