Not even at its crime peak of the early 90s did you see car jackings in broad daylight in corporate filled midtown Manhattan. People would just assume it was a movie being filmed.
That's at 4-430pm in midtown west. It's a damn ghost town. Pre covid there would be cars every where and huge crowds of people all over. How NYC is going to pay the bills when you have no office workers, tourists or bridge and tunnel crowd.
Anyone know the details of why the vehicle was facing the wrong direction on a one way street with another vehicle in front of its bumper in the right direction?
Found the NBC News article.
It says the carjacking occurred earlier, and the perp was driving the wrong way , hitting other cars, and he/they eventually hit a pole and ran off into a subway station. The guy in foot pursuit apparently was a police officer.

No kidding ! I am a lifelong NY'er .... never in my life have I seen something like that.

I agree. The boldness and lack of fear of staying in jail has led things like this. They are running amok over the people of NYC. Unacceptable but the leaders dont care. 2 weeks into the new mayoral administration and it already looks like it will go downhill further.
Best to move if possible, and let the ship sink. Its looking like it cant be salvaged anymore. I lived there for decades and still work there, and it pains me to even write this.
NYC is headed into the direction of Death Wish the movie series or the Punisher comic book. Pretty soon, we will see armed vigilantes taking to the streets. The cops will look the other way as the perps are given final justice.
From a logistical standpoint from the point of view of the carjacker, isn't Manhattan a terrible place to do a carjacking? Doesn't the slow traffic and traffic cameras everywhere, and the fact you have to take a bridge or tunnel to get off the island, a bad thing when it comes to escaping and not getting caught?
Oh right they don't have to worry about getting caught cause nothing will happen to them. Maybe that's why Manhattan is suddenly a convenient place for carjacking.
but even if they don't go to jail, it seems like the goal of the carjacking is to escape with the undamaged car and that doesn't seem to be a success for the carjacker in these cases
