Your plan is pretty solid especially with a good friend. Your friends trying to talk you into otherwise just might not be all that familiar with the Yorkville part of the UES and are riding almost solely based on experiences for the more western parts of the UES which they probably have some experience with going to Central Park and Museum row, but unless they were living there, would probably not have thought to wander more eastwards or to take the 2nd Avenue subway up to those parts. Even if it turns out that you gravitate more towards the East Village, that first year of just getting settled and familiar with the city flies by in no time and you can shift gears then if it really is more like what you want.
I also found some of the restaurants up there to be surprisingly good, and have a soft spot for Tanoshi Sushi.

Yeah I was thinking that too. I think I’m most worried about making the “wrong choice” and realizing my friends were right. Nonetheless, even if that’s the case I think I’ll still have fun and I can always move areas when the lease is up.
You're a young guy, with a friend you like, in the exciting big city. If you have a decent apartment, pretty much anywhere - and your lease probably isn't more than two years, anyway - if you're "miserable," something's wrong with you. Tell the people bad-mouthing the UES that a decent man doesn't casually dump a good friend, and that you don't want to pigeon-hole yourself.
So we can help give you recommendations on alternatives. NYC is not cheap especially the UES. If you decide to move elsewhere then travel also becomes a consideration. Since you're from CT you probably have a car. Do you plan to keep it in NYC? If so be prepared to spend $300-400/month parking it indoors or deal with waking up early to drive around the block in endless circles and getting into screaming matches with other drivers for spots at 7am.

OP's main reason for the post wasn't regarding financials. It was will he like the UES.

I have a car lease expiring soon so I’m just letting it run out. It’s actually perfect timing. Definitely will not be having a car in the city
