We taught our children to shovel out neighbors for free after a big storm. If money was offered, they took it, but it wasn't the deciding factor in whether or not a neighbor got helped. Things have changed too much over the decades.

I guess things have changed a lot. I rent a garage from someone a few streets over. they have the garages behind the row of townhouses in a little alley. I spent two hours shoveling out this morning, including in front of where two other cars come out of their garages. (my garage landlord does not want to deal with shoveling snow, which I found out the hard way last year.) I went back in the early evening today because I happend to be passing by but I didn't have my garage key and my shovel was locked inside. I noticed more snow in front, like maybe 4 inches which had fallen after i shoveled earlier.
I saw a whole bunch of people like a family a few garages down in the same alley and they were shoveling but a few of their shovels were not in use. I explained who I was and asked if I could borrow a shovel for 10 minutes, that i had already shoveled in the morning but there's more snow and I don't have access to my shovel since it's locked in the garage. The woman looked at me like I was potentially a thief, asked me to point out which garage i rent specifically and then agreed to lend the shovel like she was giving me her last born child.
When she said WElllllll, OK like that, I said, it's ok, not a big deal, Ill walk home and get my key. She ended up lending the shovel but like really under duress. Meanwhile the garage I rent was within about 30 feet of hers and wihtin eyesight.
The stupid thing is that it benefits ALL the people in that alley when everyone shovels their part, so partly me shoveling is for the community good, I don't even need my car til next Wednesday and I think a lot will be melted by then. They should be thanking renters like me for shoveling part of their communal driveway instead of treateing us like thieves who want to steal a sh7ty $10 plastic shovel.
I have to say...the city did very well with the snow. Easy to navigate even the side streets. And I didn't have to do a whole of digging out here in Queens.

LI is slammed. Love driving in snow, no one on the road. Awd works fine.
Both of my Benz's are beasts in the snow. Total tanks! My BMW and Corvette not so much. They will remain parked until the snow and salt are gone. What's nice about both MB's is that I can manually raise and lower the air suspension. I can get through a foot of snow with one car long as the body isn't dragging against the snow. The truck has a terrain mode that once it's raised has over 2 feet of clearance. Total beast.
I don't have snow tires on either one and have very few issues. If I put snow tires on them watch out!

Not so good by me in eastern Queens. I didn’t see any plows come through but it looks like a truck made a single pass down the street and cleared the width of a single vehicle.

Ha. Same here, w221, I was itching to test the system in the snow, but didn’t want any salt on the car, so I just went around the block a few times with minimal salt on the snow, mostly unplowed. With suspension in high setting it worked great, and that’s with 19 inch wheels and tires. I won’t be taking the car to Vermont for skiing, but at least it’s nice to know it’s capable.
Almost no one had shoveled when I went out for a walk today. The few people who were out shoveling I thanked them.
I heard my bldg. super using the snowblower at least 3 times yesterday. But I think with the wind the kept covering up the walkways near my bldg. I think my area got close to 9 inches of snow (based the nearest points reported in news coverage).
