Well, it's a start.

Starting this week, city schools will debut “Vegan Fridays” with an inaugural meal of veggie tacos, broccoli, and carrot and lemon salad.

The city is phasing in the shift and plans to offer cheese sandwiches as a backup; officials said non-vegan items will be available by request. One school indicated that vegan breakfasts will consist of bagels and jelly, and cereal. Beverages appear to be exempt from the new rule, and milk will still be offered.

Adams, a proud and vocal vegan, promised to make school meals, which are free to the 930,000 students, healthier during his mayoral campaign.

Offering milk literally makes no sense then. Wonder if adams gets a kick back from the milk companies.

Nope. I think it's some federal requirement.

While I like the emphasis on health, some vegan foods have peanut ingredients. That means my son has to be careful (peanut allergy!) Standard veggies only (broccoli, tomatoes, celery, salad), and no vegan Mac and cheese!

Wouldn't be crazy about this if I were still in school, but I think it's great for kids at schools in food deserts who don't normally eat healthy/balanced diets. There's way more to do about kids in those situations, but this is something nice to help them get some quality nutrition

Students themselves have been taste-testing the vegan options, Adams said.

“Our children are weighing in — they’re doing food testing, they’re determining the type of food they want that’s healthy,” he said. “And you know what? They asked for this. They are tired of the food they are being fed in their schools, and they want healthy options.”

Schools across the city had already been serving vegan items on a daily basis, the DOE said.

“The DOE is committed to the health and wellbeing of every child, and having a consistent, nourishing and filling meal each day is essential in ensuring students can succeed both inside and outside the classroom,” Lyle said in a statement. “Following on the success of Meatless Monday and Fridays, we are excited to be expanding access to healthy and nutritious food options for NYC students with the phasing in of a vegan focused menu on Fridays.”

At a press conference at City Hall on Monday, Adams said he was looking to change school menus and suggested it was time to stop serving chocolate milk, given its high sugar content.

What happened to this formerly great city and when did it lose its way?

The food in the DOE is inedible- no matter what they serve.
A tragic shame- and the food is disgusting.

Yet over 600K of the NYCDOE is eligible for free/reduced lunch which creates the lack of funding for this tragedy.
That mean's parents of 600K kids earn less (on paper) than $32,600.

I personally cannot fathom being poor and reproducing.
I would pray every day for a miscarriage.
