FIOS isn't everywhere in NYC including Manhattan.

Back in 2010 Verizon said it was done and wouldn't roll out FIOS in any new areas. BdeB and his usual suspect supporters saw red and hauled Verizon onto the carpet. In end Verizon is going to do another 500k homes, but that's the end of it IIRC.

We had this problem in my office several years ago and had months of spotty or no phone service until we ditched Verizon entirely and switched to a VOIP phone system using our Spectrum internet service. You can have a fax line with it as well, just need a special converter. And there's still NO FIOS on our block so that has never been an option!

Dr. Ida Messana, a Queens internist specializing in geriatric medicine, started experiencing internet, fax and landline phone issues in her Forest Hills office last summer and noticed a concerning side effect.

Many of her elderly patients, who depend on phone calls and faxes, as opposed to emails and texts, stopped coming because they could not reach her.

“We lost dial tone on my fax line, so I couldn’t receive or send any faxes. Imagine my patients waiting for their CAT scans, X-rays, their reports of blood, all different kinds of things,“ she explained.

Turned out her fax machine was working, but the line was out. She also relied on the line for DSL internet service to her office.

While her connectivity problems were resolved five months later, Messana fears future service outages. A Verizon technician told Messana that her phone lines are copper, which the company phased out in favor of fiber optic wires.

Most telecommunications companies these days tout their high-speed fiber optic lines, which send light down thin filaments of glass, but copper wires are still in use for some households.

When those metal wires corrode without proper upkeep, New Yorkers who rely on them are left without service.

Out With the Old
T-Mobile is cell phone service. This is about landlines.

Right. Why still depend on landlines when people are using cell phones. I ditched and finally convinced my mom to cancel her Verizon landline service (which was getting expensive) to T-mobile. The thing was T-Mobile before Sprint would be spotty (dropped calls due to poor/weak wifi signal) but ever since they merged with Sprint, the signal has become stronger and no more dropped calls. So, keeping landlines as a back up was not so crucial anymore.

It was an adjustment my mom had to make but she's used to using her cell now. I guess landlines come in handy during a blackout but that hardly justifies the cost of keeping landline service. They weren't cheap.

This medical office needs to make adjustments and change. They'll be a learning curve but that's life. Most things become obsolete eventually.

Home Internet is a new service from T-Mobile. It is basically a personal permanent hotspot

"Gateway device then converts the 5G signal to Wi-Fi, and provides a Wi-Fi signal accessible by all the devices in your home"

That's easy to say but when the power goes down or something blows out all electronic devices, there will be no backup
