Pretty sure there is a methadone clinic near that area also. Nice spot for tourists to get their first glimpse of NY leaving Penn
You are correct about the clinic.
I used to take the 8th ave to Penn from time to time just to see how it is. It’s quiet a contrast compared to other aves. That MacDonalds block is something else. Few blocks around it actually. I’d say it’s about just as creepy as it was before. Was there last week. Stood by supreme pizza.
McDonalds needs to go the Wendy's route. A limited amount of locations or the violence will continue to happen in its restaurants.
And what's that supposed to do? They actually have fewer locations, but the ones they do have look skeevy as hell, at least from the outside. I've walked by some where they clearly have junkies outside begging and such doing the old "hold the door routine for spare change".

Quite honestly 8th is a heck hole from 23rd north to 34th and beyond. Cross between homeless central, Alcoholics Anonymous and Daytop Village, with other random suspects thrown in for good measure.
Area around Penn Station and post office is lousy with homeless, panhandlers, druggies... If you're driving in area and stopped in traffic or light better roll up your windows....

Its always been like that
But of course someone on here will deny this

I worked a late-night shift in this area, 27th and 8th, in the early 1990s. Was mugged twice in one night after leaving work and had to tell the second guy that I had had already been mugged and had no money. After that, my employer allowed me to tack on 2 extra hours to the time sheet to cover the cost of the cab ride home. It was crazier at that time. Lots of drug dealing on the corner with guys saying "crack, crack, crack." NYPD officers nearby probably making the smart decision to not get involved.

Fashion Institute of Technology is in that area, and campus has security near lock down status. Still plenty of students, faculty and staff make their way up down 8th getting to or coming from Penn Station. To skells it must be like fresh meat.

Which is why am amazed people are beating down doors to get into Penn South. Suppose the grounds of complex are nice enough, but once you get onto 9th or 8th avenue much less surrounding area....

Yeah, the entire area around there has been full of degenerates for decades. It was worse in the 1990s but it could easily go back to that.
At one time, I'm guessing it was a thriving area with the garment district. Those jobs were lost never to return. I do recall working with a few older guys who got their start in sales in the garment district of the 50's and 60's. They were some darn good businessmen.

I've been saying this for the past 6 years and now people finally get it.
