News that never happened is not newsworthy. Just in case you were wondering, the newspapers, et. al. also didn't report on the spaceship that landed on the Empire State Building in 1947.
Urban Legends are not news.
I'll bet you feel pretty stoopid right about now huh?
Hi Lillietta, Radio Diaries is working on a radio piece for NPR about William (Bill) Cimillo and his trip south with the bus in 1947. We are interested in hearing your memory of the story. If you're available, please post or message me directly so we can be in touch.
Thanks and best regards,
Nellie Gilles

Best part:
"The elder Mr. Cimillo returned home to an indictment for grand larceny, but he got something else, too: a hero’s welcome. The boys at Surface Transportation voted to host a dance to raise money for his legal fees. The charges were later dropped."
IIRC, it was called MABSTOA, not Surface Transport, back in the day.
The TIME link requires a subscription, but claims he got his job back, too!
I would assume that such a bus would get stopped by police way before it got anywhere near Florida nowadays.
The 50's were a different time. Parts of Mexico are a lot like how things used to be in the US. Everything was less strict (and often potentially dangerous)
I once rode a NYC express bus to New Orleans. True story.
