Just looked up your first post ever, and it appears you are from Rome. Okay, then you should be somewhat oriented to street crime, but that crime is on the entirely different level in the US cities compared to Italy. There were two Columbia grad students from Northern Italy stabbed (one of them died) around W 110th about a year ago, so please don't be the third one. Why do you need to be inside the park at night?

I know ppl who like to take walks at night, personally I'd stay away from parks or dim lit areas late at night. Also take what ppl are saying here with a grain of slat. The ppl on the forum are an extremely small population of NYC and 90% of the ppl on here are scared to death of the city and don't think its safe. Not the most accurate depiction of NYC.

Also just because two Columbia grad students from Northern Italy were stabbed doesn't mean it will happen to you..be awear of your surrounds and you will be okay. Enjoy and welcome to NYC

Nice, I'll just stay away from the UWS and seek out safer areas.

The reality is every area has crime. Certain areas have less crimes than others for example UWS has less crime than East NY. Dont exclude UWS just yet. Walk around get the feel of it first

Yeah but I just want a place where I can walk on my own after dark. Unfortunately most of those places are too expensive for me. I thought UWS would be a decent compromise but I guess not.

I used to spend a lot of time in Riverside Park and I can tell you that its a real hilly park with lots of trees. So at night it can get kind of dark and eerie. Aside from that, the park has a rat problem, so be aware of that.
You are basing this off of what?

We KNOW you don't live there. You don't know where most of us live. I certainly have never said where I live and my ex-girlfriend lives in Manhattan. I never said where.

I personally live near Riverside park, further north, up in the 140's to 150's area. I also have a dog, which I take out when it's nice out. I wouldn't advise going hanging IN Riverside Park when dark, but I think the sidewalks are safe enough. Just make sure wherever you're walking, to go where there are other people around, and where there's lighting. I've lived in NYC for almost 20 years, it's the best city in the world. It can be dangerous, no matter which area or borough you're in here. You just need to be alert and aware, not scared and paranoid. I've lived almost everywhere in the city and in Brooklyn, just always be aware of your surroundings, stay away from crazies (obvi), and if you don't feel safe, listen to your instincts.

Enjoy your new place! I actually love the area you're at, lots of great shops, and young people. Where you're at is primarily safer, because you're near Columbia University.

BTW-I LOVE Italy! Never to Rome, but have visited Northern and Central.

My comment stands. You don't know where the majority of the people live at unless they tell you, and furthermore, YOU don't live there, so if the requirement is that people have to live there to comment on this post, then you shouldn't be for sure.

Most people who commented havent been to the park at night in years

So what are their comments based on?
Any New Yorker with half a brain can tell you that it's stupid to walk in ANY park in NYC after dark. Nothing good happens. Parks are great and safe during the day. When night falls, I immediately walk OUT of the park, even if there are still people around.

Over the years, the only time I have stayed in any park is when I was watching Shakespeare in the Park.

Now I frequent a number of restaurants near Riverside Park in the 100s, including the nearby Morningside Park because there are some restaurants that I like up by Columbia University, and I like to walk off my meals afterwards. As I said, lovely in the day. Couldn't catch me walking in any of them at night.
