You can't run your life based upon comments from random persons posted on an internet forum.

Is there crime on UWS? Yes, but that goes for entire NYC as well, no area is immune. People get jacked on UES, Chelsea, Greenwich Village, West Village, etc...

If at all possible best thing to do is visit any area of NYC thinking of living and have a walk about. In your case especially at night. This and or speak to residents who live actually live in building or area.
