If the city workers who have desk jobs didn't "do anything" we wouldn't see things like HPD not being able to process "affordable" or "low income" housing paperwork...clearly they do work and we are seeing an impact...
The 5 DOT workers that took an entire week replacing a 5 x5 section of sidewalk were "working" too.
What are they all doing for a living after they quit?
You obviously aren't following the thread more bothered to read the article. Many go into the private sector, where they earn more and have more flexibility in terms of their working conditions.

I don't have an issue with that. In fact, I encourage it. We have nearly 300,000 municipal employees.
Yup with inflation at where it is now people simply cannot afford to keep these low paying jobs. Even 50k is not enough to live decently here. More people will be leaving low paying jobs and moving to simply try and survive.
City has always paid low, sometimes very low. Only ones who make any sort of decent money are those higher up on food chain, administrative appointees, and certain uniformed services that put in good amount of OT.
Otherwise it's same for nearly everyone; you trade in higher salary for security of a city job where you cannot be touched easily or at all, this comes with bennies including secure pension.
Generations of city workers live in NYCHA or subsidized housing for a reason. Same reasons city forces developers to set aside quotas in new "affordable" housing for municipal workers.
On another note it remains to be seen in future how many who leave city for private sector are happy with that decision long term.
Private sector jobs don't offer pensions, and have little to nil job security. One bad quarter or year and your department if not entire company can be gone or heads will roll to right size things.
You mess up in a NYC job you've got union or other rules at your back with a defined process that usually results in nothing severe happening. Well not unless you've done something really bad which can lead to termination, but not always even then. OTOH private sector in NYS as most other places in USA is purely at employers will; you can be fired anytime for any or no reason. Places only bother with paperwork (written warnings) to avoid paying UI and or any possible legal action say for discrimination.
Looks like people don't want to work in jobs that put themselves at potential risk of attack/injury, from irate and crazy people. Look at Starbucks....they just announced that they're closing a number of stores, for that very reason.

It's bad enough we have psychos roaming our streets without having to wind
them up and set them loose on the caffeine express.
The rent is too damn high. That's why people are leaving. Can't afford to stay here. Pretty ironic that vacancies are up at the Dept of Buildings. But this is a trend happening all over the country where the cost of housing has far exceeded people's ability to pay.

If you thought city agencies took ages to get things done before, you ain't seen nothing yet.
As waves of employees quit city agencies it is causing bad to severe shortages. HPD cannot process "affordable" or "low income" housing paperwork both for existing lotteries and developers seeking to get started in a timely manner.
Parks department is losing and cannot find everyone from entry level workers to life guards, to engineers and other employees.
Start connecting the homeless with these jobs. Kill two birds with one stone.
